20/08/07 Hartcliffe Comunity Welcomes New Facilities
The centre will also be widely used by the local community - birthday parties, martial arts and bingo have already made use of the new facilities and it is certified as a venue for Bristol City Council training courses.
A generous donation by ISG Pearce will enable further developments at the centre; a stereo will the first investment to cater for the increasing number of birthday parties.
Already the new centre has encouraged more children to become involved in the scout group; membership of both the Cubs and the Scouts has increased with 14 new members between them in the last month.
Brian Weetch, scout group leader, said: “These new facilities are a huge development for both the Scouts and the local area. I have lived in Hartcliffe all my life and been involved with the Scouts for 25 years. I feel that it is important to have something like this at the heart of the community.
“Our previous facilities were poor; we had a very small concrete building and there was not enough money to put in central heating. After using temporary facilities for a period, we are pleased to now be up and running. This is a great way to celebrate 100 years of the Scout movement.
“As we are funded entirely by voluntary contributions, we are very grateful for the donation from ISG Pearce. This will enable us to purchase valuable supplies as the Scout group expands.
“We are now looking to expand our Explorer section (14-21 years) and start a Beaver colony for the younger children aged six to eight. In fact we are currently looking for a Beaver leader. “
Andrew Staniforth, operations director for ISG Pearce group, said: “We are happy to be contributing to the valuable tradition of the Scouts, allowing the local group to expand and attract new age ranges. However, this centre is especially valuable because it provides a centre not just for the Scouts, but for the whole community.”
