26/07/00   £2.5m Building Programme Gets Underway at King Edmund School

Bristol-based contractor ISG Pearce is undertaking the construction of the new building which will include five fully fitted science labs and two general science classrooms. The work also includes a major refurbishment programme to parts of the existing school building, providing new facilities for a number of departments including drama, beauty therapy, engineering and construction as part of the vocational centre, as well as general improvements to the school’s administration areas and toilet facilities.

Roger Gilbert said: “Having been planning this project for some time now, it’s very exciting to see the work starting. Once complete, we will be able to offer a wider range of courses and a better learning environment for all our pupils. These new and refurbished facilities will go some way to providing the young people of Yate with the 21st Century leaning environment that they deserve. We look forward to future projects developing with the Local Authority in the years ahead to keep King Edmund’s at the forefront of building schools for the future, enhancing further the learning opportunities for the pupils in the school and in the wider community.”

The programme of work is scheduled to last 52 weeks, with completion planned in plenty of time for the start of the school year in September 2007.

Commenting on the work, John Boughton, ISG Pearce’s Operations Manager, said: “We have a lot of experience working in the education sector, but this project is quite unusual as we will actually be working within the school itself for much of the time. Whilst I hope it will be an interesting experience for the staff and pupils, naturally we will be taking great care over health and safety and to ensure that we don’t disrupt the day to day activities of the school.”
