02/12/05   Work Begins on St Georges V A Church Primary School

The start of work on the new St Georges V A Church Primary School was celebrated yesterday as head teacher Sandra Medley performed the turf cutting ceremony.

The new school, which will open its doors to pupils in September 2006, will accommodate over 200 four to eleven year-old children, together with a nursery, in impressive surroundings. As well as modern classrooms, an administration office and staff room, the primary school will have a range of facilities including a multi-purpose hall, library/ICT (information & communications technology) centre, kitchen and playing field.

The school has been designed by London-based, Curl la Tourelle Architects with construction work being undertaken by Bristol-based main contractor ISG Pearce Ltd. This is the latest in a range of education projects awarded to ISG Pearce in Weston-super-Mare, including St Martin’s Church of England Junior School and Mendip Green First School.

The £2.7 million programme is being funded by the Government and North Somerset County Council, with contributions from the local church communities. Maureen Bollard, Acting Director of Education for the Diocese of Bath & Wells, said: “This is a wonderful new facility for the local community and not just those with young families; we are very excited by this imaginative project which has been supported by the Anglican, Methodist and Baptist churches”.

Commenting on the construction programme, Rob Lucas, ISG Pearce’s site manager, said: “As a local man, I’m delighted to be involved in this project which will be a real asset to the local community.

“Our work will begin on the ground preparation where we have some quite complex drainage works to undertake, including the construction of a drainage pond which will ultimately form part of the landscaping. In the new year, we will then move on to the main, construction phase, which will see the erection of a timber frame structure clad in brick and timber.”
